Welcome to the first article of the series based on learning about the basics of piping systems.
In this article, we are going to learn what are piping systems and what are some most commonly used piping system accessories.
So let’s get started.
A piping system is a network of pipes and other accessories used together to transport solid powders or fluids (liquids and gases) from one location to another in chemical processing plants.
These piping systems are carefully designed to withstand required pressure, temperature and environmental conditions for safe and efficient transportation of fluids and powder solids.
It is important to learn the basics of piping systems for personnel working in chemical processing, oil and gas processing, petrochemical and polymer industries, water treatment, HVAC systems and many other related industries.
In short, a Piping System is a network of pipes and related accessories used to transport fluids from one place in the plant to another. The primary component of piping systems is pipes. The accessories used in piping are fittings, valves, flanges, gaskets, strainers, supports and insulation.

Components of Piping Systems
Here are some commonly used accessories for piping systems:
- Pipes: Pipes are the most basic components of piping systems. These are the primary conduits in which the flow of fluids happens. Pipes come in different sizes and materials used according to process requirements.
- Fittings: Fittings are accessories used in piping systems to connect pipes and to change the direction of flowing fluids. Fittings include elbows, tees, reducers, couplings, etc.
- Valves: Valves are used to regulate (start, stop, divert and control) the flow of fluids within piping systems.
- Flanges: Flanges are used to connect two pipes or equipment and piping together and provide easy access for maintenance and inspection.
- Gaskets: Gaskets are used to fill the gap between two connecting flanges to avoid leakage from flanges while fluids are transported.
- Supports: Supports are used to keep pipes in their place and prevent movement while fluid is being transferred from inside them. Hangers, Brackets and Clamps are often used as supports for pipes.
- Insulations: Insulations are primarily used to prevent heat loss while fluids are transported from the piping systems. Different types of materials are used for pipings carrying hot and cold material.
- Strainers: Strainers and Filters are used to prevent solid particles and suspended impurities from flowing with the fluid to protect downstream equipment.
